Arthrogryposis Awareness Day, observed on June 30th, is a time when we come together to honor the strength, resilience, and determination of individuals living with arthrogryposis. This rare condition, also known as arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) affects muscle development, causing limited mobility in joints.
Causes
During development, if a fetus does not move properly and the joints stay in one place for an extended period of time, the joints contract and get stuck. There are different reasons why an unborn baby may not be moving properly, and the different causes lead to different types of arthrogryposis.
The most common form of arthrogryposis is amyoplasia. This affects the joints in the hands, wrists, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and feet.
Despite the challenges it poses, the arthrogryposis community demonstrates remarkable determination and an indomitable spirit that inspires us all. It is important for us to come together and honor their strength, while also fostering a more inclusive and accessible world.
Treatment
Arthrogryposis doesn’t have a cure, but treatment can greatly improve quality of living. Treatment can include physical and occupational therapy, stretching, braces and splints, and orthopedic surgery.
